La storia narra di un cavaliere di nome Desiderio il quale, tornando dalla crociata in Terra santa, giunse a Malborghetto, il colle dove apparve la Croce all'imperatore Costantino, dove cadde addormentato dalla stanchezza. Il giorno dopo fu svegliato dalla campana di una pastorella, Tommasina, che era bellissima e apparteneva al Re Gregorio di Sacrofano. Nacque subito l'amore tra i due, andarono insieme al paese per chiedere a Re Gregorio di lasciarli sposare. Il Re ridendo a crepapelle per la richiesta di Desiderio gli propose un patto: sfidare i sui sette campioni a duello, spada e lancia, in gioco c'era l'amore per Tommasina e la libertà di Sacrofano dal perfido re Gregorio. L'indomani tutto il paese si radunò alla Prata dove Desiderio sconfisse i 7 campioni, compreso il Saraceno, riscuotendo l'adorazione della folla. Al momento di rivendicare il premio il re gli impose l'ultima prova: infilzare una stella con la lancia e portargliela.
Giunse la notte e Desiderio era disperato insieme alla sua bella, guardando le stelle già vedevano la loro fine.
